The seventh annual Centex Jammin All-Star Games were a huge success! Forty-seven athletes from all over the state gathered at Mary Hardin-Baylor University on Saturday, July 22, for the yearly event. Players were selected via nominations and invitations. Players met with their coaches and practiced Saturday afternoon. After the dinner break, the participants enjoyed an evening of good spirited competition.
Winners included: Three point contest- 1st-Ryan Davenport, Thorndale, 2nd-Adam Lara-Goliad. Free throw contest: 1st Ronnie Bush,-Danbury, 2nd-Thomas Weber, Cameron. Two ball contest-1st-Jeremy Young, Ponder and Mansour Khoury, Ponder. 2nd- Nate Kerley,Hutto and Josh Reeves, Hutto Knock-out contest-1st-Doug Shipwash, Edna, 2nd-Antarius Green-Calvert.
Dunk contest- 1st-Leon Mays-Bryan, finalists-Greg Dunn, Mexia, Jewayne Mills, Kilgore, Matt Carroll-Lampasas, Jason Carter-Caldwell.
At the conclusion of the competitions, the players returned to the dorm for pizza and rest.
The next morning, after breakfast, the teams met with their coaches for a shoot around and final instructions.
At 11:00 A.M., Team One(white, home) met Team Two(blue, visitors) to kick off the first of three games. Team One, coached by Bobby Kopetsky and Duane Vincent of Hutto, struggled early in the game by scoring only 10 points while Team Two, led by Coach Doug Boxell of Ponder and Coach Noe McCarthy of Fayetteville, were able to put up an impressive 26 first quarter points. The second quarter was more evenly played as the home team hit for 22 while the visitors hit for 20. At half-time, the blue team led 46-32; however the white team was by no means finished for the day. Team One exploded for 28 third quarter and 32 fourth quarter points, while Team Two could muster only 18 and 15.
When the final horn sounded, Team One outscored Team Two, 92-79. Scoring for Team One included: Nate Kerley, Hutto-7, Doug Shipwash, Edna-7, Josh Reeves, Hutto-8, Kendrick Kelly, Dripping Springs-26, Ty Mullins-Dripping Springs-11, Leon Mays, Bryan-21, and Toby Stock, Rosebud-Lott-8. Also playing great defense and playing strong on the boards was Adam Stover-Hutto. Team Two scoring included: Shamond Grimes, Calvert-10, Jeremy Young, Ponder-5. Josh Nobles, Fayetteville-6, Manour Khoury, Ponder-3, James Horner, Skyline-22, Janar Bradford, Skyline-18, and Rylan Coulter, Terrell-17.
Two hours later, Teams 3 and 4 hit the floor for another exciting contest.
Team 3 (white, home) was coached by Alvie King, Milano and Mike Balderama, Moody, while Team 4 (blue, visitor) was led by Bradley Dickerson-Thorndale and Kenny Driska-Rosebud-Lott. Team 3 was able to capture a narrow 18-14 lead after one period; however, Team 4 fought back in the second by chalking up 23 points and holding the white group to 17. The blue squad took a 37-35 half-time advantage. After the dunk finals, both teams took the floor for the second half of play. Team 3 tallied 20 and 17 points, while Team four connected on 23 and 23.
When time ran out, Team 4 took the contest 93-74. Scoring for Team 3 included: Patrick Felan, Burnet-10, Antarius Green, Calvert-7, Craig Vaculin, Rockdale-6, Nathan Hunt, Rockdale-4, Richard Garrett, Belton-15, Thomas Webber, Cameron-25, and Eric Manning, Moody-7. Scoring for Team 4 included: Brandon Hayes, Jarrell-16, Jared Melde, Thorndale-2, Jason Fry, Austin-9, Greg Dunn, Mexia-20, Ryan Davenport, Thorndale-5, Matt Carroll, Lampasas-21, Bret Wilson, Brock-3, and Lloyd Murray, Wichita Falls-17.
Team Five took the floor to face Team Six for the final game of the day.
Team Five (white, home), led by Coach John Kovar of Shephard trailed Team Six led by Jason and Justin Simank UMHB and members of the Austin Cyclones, 17-28 after one period. The blue team upped its halftime lead 51-38 by outscoring the white 23-21 in the second period. The white bounced back in the third by hitting for 21 to the blues 14, however, Team Six refused to give in and tallied 27 fourht period points to Team Fives 19, for a final score of 90-77.
Scoring for Team Five included: Jason Carter, Caldwell-30, Chris Carter, Caldwell-14, Jeremy Williams, Georgetown-18, Jewayne Mills, Kilgore-7, and Bart Schooley, Cedar Park-9. Adam Lara, Goliad and Sam Trevino, Moody rounded out the squad with outstanding defense. Scoring for Team Six included: Ray Brown, Rockdale-8, Terrick Lemon, Skyline-6, John Berkman, Marble Falls-6, Taurean Curry, Skyline-40, Ryan Pucek, Danbury-9, Adam Weise, Robinson-7, and Jason Fry, Austin High-16. In addition, Ronnie Bush, Danbury, contributed with great defense and floor leadership.
Plans are to award at least four scholarships to deserving players, to add to the twenty-one grants that have been given since 1996.
