2004 GAMES A HUGE SUCCESS!!
The Ninth Annual Centex Jammin'All-Star Games were a huge success again. The games were held at Belton High School this year due to construction at Mary-Hardin Baylor University. Jammin Games Shifts Site
By GREG WILLE, BELTON; The Centex Jammin'All-Star Games wasn't moved to Belton High School this year because of anything bad about its usual venue, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Actually, the annual event for recently graduated high school basketball players is at Belton this year because of something noteworthy UMHB is doing that will begin to benefit it next year. UMHB's new Frank and Sue Mayborn Campus Center is under construction and the old Mabee Gym no longer is available, so the 10th edition of the Jammin' Games has been shifted to Belton's Tiger Gym. But at this point next year, event organizer Jeff Lieberman and the Games's competitors will get to experience the enjoyment of using the 2,500-seat, arena-style Mayborn Center."The new facility will make our games really turn the corner and make them the best all-star games they can be," said Lieberman, head coach of Thorndale's boys basketball team. "It willl be a top-notch deal!" Added Lieberman of Belton agreeing to host this year's event, "They have been bending over backwards to help us put this on. Chuck Douglas (Belton's assistant athletic director) has been unbelievably helpful." This year's 50 or so all-star players, spread among six teams, will report to their dorms on the UMHB campus today, practice and participate in several skills contests tonight, and play the three games on Sunday (11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m.). Today's events have free admission. All-day tickets for Sunday cost $5 for adults and $2 for students. Proceeds will go toward helping Lieberman meet his goal of granting at least four scholarships in the $100-$150 range for players who plan to try to further their basketball careers in college. Last year we gave out four, so my hope is that we can give out that many or more this year, he said. Many of this year's participants are from area schools or have local ties. The area players set to compete are Milano's Cory Albright on Team 1, the Bartlett duo of Lance Cain and Eric Steglich on Team 2, and Rosebud-Lott's Chris Vrana on Team 6. The coaches include Salado's Tom Long, Bartlett's Jimmie Cain, Milano's Alvie King, Mike Balderama of Floresville and formerly of Moody, and ex-UMHB players Jason and Justin Simank. Overall, the Games' players come from large schools such as Carrollton Newman Smith and Austin High and from small ones such as Round Top-Carmine and New Deal. Lieberman said the only other all-star games he knows of that include players from across Texas and house them overnight are those run by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and the Texas High School Coaches Association. "There are some areas that have (all-star) games with local kids, but no others that pull from the entire state," said Lieberman, who estimated that two-thirds of the Jammin' Games' players were first- or second-team all-region picks last season. Today's practice sessions are scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m., and the skills competition is set to start at 7:15 p.m., featuring 3-point, free-throw, slam-dunk (preliminary round), and 2-ball contests. On Sunday, teams 1 and 2 will play at 11 a.m., teams 3 and 4 at 1 p.m., and teams 5 and 6 at 3. by Greg Wille
