The 12th Annual Centex Jammin All-Star Games were a huge success again. The games were held at UMHB (11th year), and for the second year in their beautiful new facility. Players checked in to the dorm on Saturday, July 22, 2006, and then participated in practices and contests. Forty-five outstanding area athletes took part in three separate games on Sunday.

Game one kicked off at 11:00 AM, which featured primarily players from 1A and 2A schools, although not exclusively. Team One, dressed in white jerseys and coached by Brian Courtney of McMullen County and Robert Erger of Princeton, tallied 18 first quarter points, while Team Two, uniformed in maroon and coached by Kevin Kelly of Granger, connected for 18 as well. In the second period, Team One hit for 19 more, while Team Two scored an impressive 22. The Maroon led 40-37 at the iutermission.

TEMPLE TELEGRAM ARTICLE, JULY 22, 2006
In 12th year, Centex Jammin' All-Star Games still going strong at UMHB
by Greg Wille
Published July 22, 2006

BELTON - In 1995, the Centex Jammin’ All-Star Games began as a fledgling event with 20 high school basketball seniors, two teams and actually only one game.

Now, 11 years later, it’s a summer institution.

The 12th edition will begin today with team practices and contests, then conclude on Sunday with three games - starting at 11 a.m. - at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Mayborn Campus Center.

Six teams with a total of 48 seniors from across Texas are expected to compete, including area players Jason Meyer of Bruceville-Eddy, Chad Simpson of Granger and Tommy York of Lampasas. Most of the players come from small high schools, though Class 5A Duncanville and 4A Boerne are represented.

There is no charge to attend today’s 1-5:30 p.m. practices and 7 p.m. contests, which will feature dunks (preliminaries), 3-point and free-throw shooting, 2-ball and knockout.

Tickets for Sunday’s 11 a.m./1 p.m./3 p.m. tripleheader and the finals of the dunk contest cost $5 for adults and $2 for students.

Jammin’ Games organizer Jeff Lieberman, Thorndale’s boys basketball coach for 15 years, created the event along with Milano coach Alvie King for two primary purposes: To reward standout senior basketball players and to offer scholarships for many of those who plan to attend college and attempt to further their basketball careers.

Lieberman says the inaugural event didn’t generate enough revenue after expenses to award any scholarships but that 40 players have received scholarships in the $100-$200 range since 1996, including five last year.

“We try to give them to kids who are going to try to walk on and continue their career,” Lieberman said. “I’ve gotten a lot of help from local sponsors and that helps a lot.”

CHECK BACK REGULARLY FOR UPDATED INFORMATION. PLAYERS SHOULD HAVE ALL PAPERWORK AND PICTURES SUBMITTED. SPONSOR CHECKS WERE DUE BY JUNE 15, 2006. CONTACT COACH LIEBERMAN WITH QUESTIONS: jslieber@usa.net or 512-217-7933 cell #
