Centex Jammin All-Star Games conclude in style
By GREG WEGHORST
BELTON ; Kenny Driska is making the move from head boys basketball coach to administration at Rosebud-Lott. But on Sunday, he had one last game to coach ; and he made it worthwhile.
Driska, along with coach Noe McCarthy of Fayetteville, guided Team 3; to a lopsided 120-84 win over Team 4; in the middle tilt of the 11th annual Centex Jammin All-Star Games held at Mary Hardin-Baylor's Frank and Sue Mayborn Campus Center.
It was nice to go out with a big win, Driska said with a smile.
But adding to the fun was his opportunity to coach a pair of graduated Cougars in Mark Rudloff (19 points) and East Texas Baptist-bound Charles Thornton (11 points).
That was really nice to coach those guys for one last time, he said. And it was equally as big for them to go out by winning a big all-star game like this one. All the players on our team did well.
Team 3 broke open a flip-flop style game after the first four minutes, thanks in most part to the play of Chez Perez (Floresville), who had a team-high 29 points.
Point guard Diego Castro (Comfort) led the way in turning a 23-point halftime lead into the final margin with the majority of his 24 points coming the second half.
Rudloff made his presence known underneath the basket and Jarrell's Corey Smith hit a 3-pointer to begin the second half.
Fueling Team 4 was Travis Clark of Class 2A state semifinalist Salado. After just one bucket in the first quarter, Clark heated to turn in a game-high 31 points.
Clark, who is headed to Schreiner, admitted that team foul trouble and a disadvantage on rebounding let the game slip away a bit, but said he enjoyed every bit of the two-day gig.
It was a lot of fun and all the guys were really nice he said. I was actually dreading it a bit (because of not having played an organized game in a while and not knowing how I would match up). But it all turned out great.
Team 5 rallies past
Team 6 then runs away with 107-91 win
Team 6 was dominant early on, constantly leading by at least double digits throughout the first half.
Team 5 was staring at a 50-40 deficit out of the lockeroom, but eventually turned the corner when Derrick Reescano (Hardin) converted a lay-up for a 73-72 lead in the final minutes of the third. It was the first lead-change since the opening two minutes.
Team 5 went on to out-score Team 6 34-19 to close it out.
We finally started playing defense, said Bruceville-Eddys Chris Perry, who had five points for Team 5.;Then we started getting the loose balls and grabbing all the rebounds which we struggled with early on.
This whole thing was fun, something I'll always remember
Added Belton's Adrian Curtis, who had nine points ; including the games first dunk that came in first quarter; for Team 6 After halftime they took the momentum and we just sort of broke down. But this whole experience was fun and really exciting. I'm glad I got to do it.
Lane Boxell (Ponder) led the charge with a team-high 23, while Charles Houston (Seguin) poured in 22 for Team 5 John Calhoun (Klein Collins), who is headed to UMHB, added 15 in the paint.
RJ Bandy (Wimberley), who was filling in for an injured player after playing in the opening game, drained seven 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 29 points.
Beltons Melvin Miller added 11 points and had perhaps the games most entertaining moment. He hit a running shot right before the halftime buzzer sounded from just inside the half court line that brought the crowd to its feet.
Team 1 charges back
to claim 109-102 win
over Team 2;
Team 2 led by RJ Bandy's 34 points, had built a 16-point lead in the first half of the opening tilt. But Tenehas Jeremy Moore and Albanys Zane Johnston of Team 2 had no plans of conceding.
Moore had 30 of his 31 points in the second half, while Johnston was good for 23 of his 31 after the break to lead their squad to victory. Each had four 3's in the second half.
Robert Sherik added 15 points for Team 1 and Milano's Jacob Dent threw in four points.
Barltett's Chris Thomas chipped in 18 points for Team 2, while Nathaniel Davis (Liberty Hill) added 13.
UMHB-bound Camillo
claims dunk title
Mary Hardin-Baylor-bound post Ben Camillo (Argyle) walked away the champion of the dunk finals at halftime of Game 2.
Camillo put together three dunks a right-handed hard jam, an off-the-backboard slam and a high-octane reverse windmill dunk that put him over the top.
It felt good to come down here and get the feel of the gym, Camillo said. It was also nice to do that in front of some of my future teammates (who were mostly all in attendance).;
Another future Crusader, John Calhoun (Klein Collins), was the runner-up. Calhoun had a 360-degree dunk as well as an off-the-backboard jam and a reverse slam.
Abernathy;s Tate Riley was the third-place finisher, while Rosebud-Lotts Mark Rudloff took fourth.
All four had qualified for the finals after Saturday's first round.
NOTES: Event organizer and Thorndale boy's basketball coach Jeff Lieberman said that Sunday's attendance was up at least 50-100 from last year. . . This years games were the first in the new, state-of-the-art, 2,500-seat Mayborn Campus Center. . . The event's website is http://embark.to/centex. by GREG WEGHORST
